I love the cinema… I love my piano… I love my country: Italy. This album includes all of three in one single idea: some of the best soundtracks of outstanding movies, all written by Italian or Italian-American composers. I’m one of the about one billion people who anxiously wait for The Night of the Oscars. With a thermos full of coffee I spend all the night cheering for we Italians, our excellence, our style. And we are there, always: directors like Fellini, Tornatore, Benigni, Sorrentino; photography; set design; costumes and of course music: Rota, Mancini, Piovani, Marianelli, Giacchino and finally, after many nominations, in 2016 Ennio Morricone. This album is a journey across the music of great movies, from the late eight-hundred’s to our days. Melody is the true nature which unifies all these pieces: the excellence of Opera. Opera is an Italian creation: it is in fact our best musical expression. Cinema is the Opera of our times, able to move and touch our deepest memories, feelings and dreams. Sometimes watching a movie it happens I become attached to one particular character; sometimes I kind of identify with it. But this sensation is much stronger if I just focus on the music: music is the essence of any character; it can reveal the hidden nuances of their personality. While playing the pieces of this album I immediately become Holly with her Cat in Breakfast at Tiffany’s; I’m Anita Ekber dreaming inside the Trevi fountain or even Marcello fooling around; I’m Driss and Philippe on a Maserati flying through the streets of Paris; I’m Jake La Motta ready to fight; I’m floating with the ocean. I hope that whoever listens to this collection lives and enjoys all those lives with me. … of course I haven’t forgotten the 3 Bonus Tracks all by the composer Michael Giacchino. Having two kids, high quality cartoons go down great in the family so I chose to include three of the most emotional pieces among our Disney music collection.
